Professor Sjef van Erp is emeritus professor at Maastricht University, visiting professor at Trento University and at the University of Oldenburg. Within the international research school Ius Commune, in which Maastricht University cooperates with other universities from the Netherlands and with universities abroad, he established the research group on comparative, European and global property law. After his retirement (January 2021) at Maastricht University the research school awarded him honorary membership. He is also Deputy-Justice at the Court of Appeals ‘s-Hertogenbosch. Professor Van Erp is co-founder and former Vice-President of the European Law Institute (ELI) and he is currently the President of the International Association of Legal Science (AISJ-IALS, a member of UNESCO’s International Science Council). He was for many years President of the Netherlands Comparative Law Association, now an honorary member of that organisation, and is a member of the American Law Institute (ALI) and titular member of the International Academy of Comparative Law. Prof. Van Erp is co-founder and editor of the European Journal of Comparative Law and Governance (formerly: Electronic Journal of Comparative Law), he is also co-founder and editor-in-chief of the European Property Law Journal. Sjef van Erp is co-reporter for two projects of the ELI in the area of IT and law, focussing on blockchain, smart contracts and access to digital assets, and is involved in projects on land registration of the European Land Registry Association (ELRA) and a project on enforcement against digital asses of the International Union of Judicial Officers (UIHJ-IUJO).
